All through the years, break dancing very surprisingly was not referred to as a dance art, but something that was just meant to make a breaking pattern in the music. It was at a later stage that the movements gained recognition as a dance form and started to be performed actively by the youth in the 1970s. Today, it is widely recognized as one type of street dance and has got a huge following.

On closer analysis, you will find that this dance is a unique combination of dance, athleticism, martial arts and even pantomime. Individuals who wish to learn this dance must have a total grip on some basic dance movements. The reason is that break dance is often an impromptu expression of one’s creativity in dance and involves a lot of improvisation and for that the basics need to be in place.

This enables the individual to adapt his movements to the changing beat in the music and keep up to the tempo. Remember that very often break dance is not a rehearsed performance, but happens on the spot and the performer has total freedom to improvise according to the music and its beats.

Appropriate dressing plays an equal role and the combination of low pants with large T-shirts with a hat worn sideways has become synonymous with this kind of dance. The footwear is vital and sneakers have been preferred over other footwear due to the grip and flexibility it provides.

Break dancing takes a lot out of you in terms of intricate foot movements and unless you have the right footwear, you could slip and hurt your self.
Every break dance performance is potentially risky for the performer. His enthusiasm to carry out some complex movements and the fact that this dance needs to be performed on a hard surface increases the possibility of injury.

Even expert dancers have been known to fall down and get injured and that is why it is recommended that the dancer must possess basic physical fitness and should be of light weight.
