One dance more associated with urban life, but ethnic in its origin and gaining tremendous popularity is the hip hop dance. It made its bow in the early 1900s when New York youth took it to the streets and made it very famous.

You can express your creativity with hip hop dance. This is a dance that does not prescribe very specific movements that have to be necessarily followed and permits the individual to add his flair to it. Your body movements only need to complement the beat of the music and you can add power and vigorous movement to it through your own creative inputs. So, jumps, twists and a lot of free movement can be adequately introduced in hip hop by the performer.

This form of dancing is a good physical activity for those wishing to improve their flexibility, balance of body and muscle coordination. Dancers have often said that they experience a feeling of deep spiritual bliss.
There are many steps and hand movements that make up hip hop dancing which are different from those found in ballroom or ballet form of dancing.

Those forms are more technical and require specific movements that can be achieved only through formal training and practice. Some of the movements have specific names assigned to them in these kinds of formal dancing forms.

Hip hop, though accords total freedom to the individual and there is no restriction and that is one of the main reasons as to why it is gaining in popularity every day. People do not want to be restricted or limited to technical jargon and wish to dance with gay abandon. Once they are familiar with the basic rhythm, hip hop dancing comes easily to many people.

Since this form of dance is almost freestyle, so to speak, there are no age barriers and you do not require formal instructors to teach you this form of dance. That is one of its great advantages and explains its easy acceptability amongst people.

It is normal human behavior to have some expectations from any coaching class and when somebody joins a street dancing class, he should be prepared and expect certain things from the environment, the fellow learners and the tutor.

Let us look at some of them as under:
a) Some of your colleagues will be excellent

In the beginning; you will feel that some of your fellow learners are very good and able to pick up things pretty easily. The reason is that you are slow to get used to the different routine and as a relative comparison; the others seem to fare better. With time, you will find that you too are able to do the moves that initially seemed very difficult.

b) Your fellow learners will appear better dressed and to the occasion.

You will find some of the people dressed very appropriately in street style and though that does not mean you are inappropriately dressed in your normal dress. You just have to be prepared mentally to discover this when you start attending the classes. However, what is important is that you need to be dressed in clothing that does not hinder movement and is comfortable for dancing.

c) Routine will get accelerated as you go along.

You will often find that there is a period when things just meander along and the tutor waits for everybody to get a grip on things. It is at this time that you should practice and concentrate adequately so that when your tutor decides to speed up things, you are well prepared and do not have to do any catching up.

d) Do not think that you can get it right the first time

You must be patient and should not place undue stress on your self to pick up things perfectly at the very first instance. It is only through regular practice that you will begin to dance well and enjoy the experience.

e) Try to enjoy the experience

It is important to relax to be able to absorb the learning and that will eventually show in your performance. You will begin to enjoy dancing and that is the sign of good dancers.

All through the years, break dancing very surprisingly was not referred to as a dance art, but something that was just meant to create a breaking pattern in the music. It was at a later stage that the movements gained recognition as a dance form and began to be performed actively by the youth in the 1970s. Today, it is widely recognized as one type of street dance and has got a huge following.

On closer analysis, you will find that this dance is a unique combination of dance, athleticism, martial arts and even pantomime. Individuals who wish to learn this dance must have a total grip on some basic dance movements. The reason is that break dance is often an impromptu expression of one’s creativity in dance and involves a lot of improvisation and for that the basics need to be in place.

This enables the individual to adapt his movements to the changing beat in the music and keep up to the tempo. Remember that very often break dance is not a rehearsed performance, but happens on the spot and the performer has total freedom to improvise according to the music and its beats.

Appropriate dressing plays an equal role and the combination of low pants with large T-shirts with a hat worn sideways has become synonymous with this kind of dance. The footwear is important and sneakers have been preferred over other footwear due to the grip and flexibility it provides.

Break dancing takes a lot out of you in terms of intricate foot movements and unless you have the right footwear, you could slip and hurt your self.
Every break dance performance is potentially risky for the performer. His enthusiasm to carry out some complex movements and the fact that this dance needs to be performed on a hard surface increases the possibility of injury.

Even expert dancers have been known to fall down and get injured and that is why it is recommended that the dancer must possess basic physical fitness and should be of light weight.

The break dance is a unique method and style of dancing that has become an integral part of today’s hip hop scene. The dance itself is very animated and to the normal person seems very difficult and impossible to do. Of course, this dance is not something that can be performed by everybody. The individual has to have very good fitness levels and flexibility of body to attempt some of the more twisting moves that are an inseparable part of break dance.

The art of break dance consists of some defined movements, but the performers are at liberty to improvise and make their own movements also. This unstructured approach lends a unique feel to this dance and makes it a very exciting dance to watch. The sudden change in moves often follows changes in the music beats and this dance relies heavily on good beat music to lend it the rhythm to get going.

Top rock and down rock have been identified as the two types of break dance and very often, despite their individual identities, they merge into one during a routine and lend a wonderful variety to the movements.
Let us look at some of them in detail.

Top rock

This involves a series of steps that is performed as the person remains in a standing position and it usually the preliminary movement. This is the precursor for more complex movements that follow once the individual is sufficiently warmed up.

Down rock
This style consists of all the footwork and steps along with hand movements performed on the floor. Down rock movements tell the audience about the footwork, control and speed of the dancer and expert performers include a lot of athletic movements as well.

Power moves

These are moves that not only require the dancer to be graceful and agile with his foot movements, but also necessitate the dancer to possess sufficient body control in executing complex windmill and flare type of movements.

Break dancing requires physical strength and tremendous practice and it is only with sustained dedication that one can become a good dancer.
